#1/179:
Atlantic Salmon
Salmo salar
Captured 7/15/20, St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Method: Angling. NON-NATIVE. Watershed: Lake Huron
Notes: Great day fishing with my friend Dr. Jerry Urquhart. It's a long drive from E. Lansing to the Soo, but it's worth it to get into these guys. I caught my personal best this year, along with a few smaller ones. We use long (8'6"-9') ultralight rods and throw flies under a bobber. These fish are stocked by Lake Superior State University, but there is an expanding stocking program in various locations throughout Lake Huron. I know they're non-native in the St. Mary's, but the fight is absolutely dynamite--they can skyrocket 4' into the air and then go on 100 yard runs. They're also (in my opinion) the best-tasting salmon in the Great Lakes. I like to smoke them or make blackened salmon using Paul Prudhomme's recipe. Don't buy the pre-packaged blackening seasoning--make your own--and don't forget the butter. Lots and lots of butter.
