#15/179:
Round Whitefish
Prosopium cylindraceum
Captured 7/28/20, Lake Huron, MI. near Oscoda. Method: Gillnet
Notes: Round Whitefish (aka Menominee) belong to the Salmonid family, and are a member of the subfamily Coregoninae along with Cisco and Lake Whitefish. This one was caught on my trip with the MDNR for spring surveys. People like to smoke them, but their flesh is considered inferior to the Lake Whitefish and has to be kept cold. Round Whitefish differ from Lake Whitefish in a number of ways, but I can always tell them apart by looking at their snout. Round Whitefish snouts are pointed and look pinched. Lake Whitefish snouts are blunt and almost square.
