#6/179:
Largemouth Bass
Micropterus salmoides
Captured 7/3/20, Park Lake near Bath, MI. Method: Angling. Watershed: Lake Michigan (Grand R.)
Notes: Caught this fish with my graduate student Samantha Strandmark. We were fishing for her red swamp crayfish biocontrol project. This was a 'keeper' for the project, meaning that it was the appropriate size to use for her experiments (we have a capture permit). We caught a number of bass either too small or too large for the project, the biggest around 2lb (below). People have shied away from eating largemouth in recent years. They taste good, especially when they're caught in spring and fall! Truthfully, I should have kept the fish below to eat, but I too am guilty of too much catch and release for this species. .
