Lake Whitefish
Coregonus clupeaformis
Captured 7/15/20, St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Method: Angling. Watershed: Lake Huron
Notes: These guys were by-catch from our Atlantic Salmon trip. I'm always happy to get a few. They're pretty hard to bring in the boat, because their mouths are so soft. Bigger ones have to be netted if you want to keep them. I smoke them whole, using Alder wood. I use Alder because I'm from Seattle, and that's what people use for fish.
I also captured Lake Whitefish in gillnets from my trip out with the MDNR. We didn't catch many, but this one (below) was in good enough shape for me to take a close-up. You can see along the nape of its neck the missing scales from taking it out of the gillnet.
