#9/179:
Round Goby
Neogobius melanostomus
Captured 8/28/20, St. Clair River near Marysville, MI. NON-NATIVE. Method: Angling. Watershed: St. Clair
Notes: Caught fishing for walleye on the St. Clair. These little bastards were everywhere. We were dragging nightcrawler harnesses on the bottom, and must have been going too slow. Usually they just steal part or all of your worm, but I landed this one. Yay.
Round Goby arrived in shipping container ballast sometime in the late 80s. They're pretty much all over the Great Lakes now. They're pesky bait stealers, but also have become a critical forage item for a number of predators including Walleye, Lake Trout, and Smallmouth Bass. We even see them occasionally in salmon diets.
