#12/179:
Rainbow Trout (Steelhead)
Oncorhynchus mykiss
Captured 10/8/20, Bois Brule River, WI. NON-NATIVE. Method: Angling. Watershed: Lake Superior.
Notes: I'm pretty sure fishing for fall steelhead is considered cruel and unusual punishment in 112 countries. You're wading in freezing cold river water that is somehow warmer than the air temperature, casting repeatedly for hours with the HOPE of hooking a fish. And by the way, try not to die by stumbling on a boulder and getting swept downstream. A good day is 2 fish--no, that's a GREAT day. More than two fish? I'm getting drunk that night. Luckily for me, this was not one of those tortuous trips. Prior to COVID, I planned to travel to Duluth in early October to give a seminar at UM-Duluth and go fishing with a professor colleague there. Well, I gave the seminar on Zoom and went fishing with my colleague any way. It was well worth the 11-hour drive. It was beautiful. Fall colors, mild temperatures, and chrome fish. I ended up landing three fish (two legal-size) during an 8-hour, six-mile hike down the Bois Brule.
