#27/179:
Smallmouth Bass
Micropterus dolomieu
Captured 10/20/20, Red Cedar River, MI near East Lansing, MI. Method: Electrofishing. Watershed: Lake Michigan (Grand R. watershed)
Notes: I really like Smallmouth Bass. This is the fish that got me hooked on crayfish, oddly enough. Unlike their Largemouth cousins, this species prefers rocky substrate and thrives in creeks and rivers of the Midwest and mid-south (e.g. Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri). In general, where there's abundant crayfish, smallmouth bass won't be far away. But don't sleep on 'Smallies'. These are some of the toughest fighting fish on hook and line. Lake St. Clair is one of the premier Smallmouth fisheries in the entire world, and people from all over the country come to Michigan to catch them there. Last time I went to Lake St. Clair, I met anglers from Texas, Tennessee, and Indiana who just wanted to see what the fuss was about. They did not go home disappointed.
